I have only just returned from the Continent, and finding a great accumulation of correspondence am forced to use the hand of my secretary. I regret to say that (with all the interest I take in your work) it is not in my power to accede to your wish. I have been obliged for many years to decline to lecture before any audience but that of the Royal Academy. Applications to do so have been, since my Presidency, so extremely numerous that a contrary course would have been absolutely fatal to me as a hardworking artist, and this I am sure you would not desire.
