Description | Hind Head House, Haslemere 4 May 1890 My dear Leighton Twice in my life - the latest attack occurring several years ago, I have been assailed by gout! It has always occurred after I had overstrained the muscles of my foot by rough walking. To my chagrin, disappointment, and pain, I found myself yesterday morning unable to set my foot upon the ground. This cut off the delight I always feel in attending your annual dinner. It was a most accursed dispensation that this calamity should descend upon me at such a time. I sometimes ask myself whether your excellent father is still alive. He was of ripe age when I saw him last. His kindly dignity and liberality made him a great favourite with me. And surely the evening of his life must have been rendered an 'evening glow' by the career of his son. Always yours John Tyndall
