DescriptionDear Signor
It was a very sincere pleasure to me to get your kind letter & to have your news direct from Head Quarters tho' I had been kept au courant of your movements by Aitchison thro' the faithful [-] & knew that you were making a little halt at Malta of the many stairs (what a striking place it is!). How after all these long years in which you have seen the sun (the real sun 'not as in northern climes obscurely bright') in your dreams only, you must have revelled - & be revelling in his unclouded southern splendour! Let it add a point to your enjoyment to know that you have left behind a darkness of which I have not, I think, yet seen the like for murky abomination. And so you have gone up the Nile! I wonder how far, to Assiont? To Asswan! To Abu Simbel? You will see endless wonders but nothing will delight you like the limpid days themselves & the limpid nights. I shall never see either again & I envy you; and you are enjoying these things à deux - and you assure me that you are more than ever certain of having 'done the right thing' but of that my dear Signor I have already quite convinced myself & have rejoiced accordingly, and pray say mille choses from me to the Signora. I suppose you get regular budgets of home news - politics you have probably dismissed - the more happy you. The best news to my mind at this moment is that we have elected Gilbert & that triumphantly with over forty votes! Willie Richmond is going to send a picture this year - swallowing his foolish pride, & than I have no doubt he too will be gathered into the flock & Hunt who has practically cut Ned Jones for accepting will gnash his teeth in wrathful scorn. I am going to try to get something of yours for the Adelaide Jubilee Exhib (I am Chairman of Com) but it is difficult to know what to do and as you are away I can't lay my hands on anything in Melbury Rd - which is tantalizing! Goodbye for today old boy - all good things to you. Your affe. F.L.
PS I am modelling the 'Jubilee' medallion!
