Dear Signor
A line to thank you for your kind letter. I am very glad you like my address which was the result of a deal of hard work - but you can imagine the labour of squeezing even the ourline of so complex a subject into the limits of an (even long) 'discourse'. On the other hand, of course, the complexity of the subject is at the root of its interest. My friend, our Consul at Madrid, a very accomplished man, is translating it into Spanish & will publish it in one of the best Spanish Reviews. There is in the R.A. a Venus (!!) by Velazquez which is prodigious for painting - but oh the pose of it!
Yes I was deeply shocked at Browning's death. He leave a very big gap in our Literature. And I had known him for 35 years. I think with you that it would have been well to translate the ashes of Mrs Browning to the same tomb in the Abbey - but of course the initiative in such a matter should have come from the world of letters & oddly enough I have heard no more of it. I wish you a happy Xmas my dear old friend. Give my love to Mrs Mary & believe me ever
Yours affec'ly
Fred Leighton
