Description | Dear Mary It was very sweet of you to copy out the little excerpt from the Graphic which was much better than that of the Times. It was however in making me contrast the 'intellectual' with the sublime (which does not contrast with it) instead of the 'intimate' - which does - I had in view that intensely intimate humanity which we see, mainly, on the Greek Vases, which contrasts so strikingly with the grave-sublimity of - say - the 'Fates' (as they used to be called) - and which so emphatically stamps Greek Art with universality in time and space.
