Description | Hand knotted using fine sheep's wool from one of Persia's oldest cities, Hamadan, a region filled with thriving weaving centres. The term "Kelleh" relates to the uncommon sizing of the rug as the length is considerably more extensive than the width. Many Persian Hamadan rugs showcase a large central medallion, however, older Hamadans such as this one have a field filled with a distinct motif that is repeated. This piece also contains another signature element of Antique Persian Hamadan Rugs in that the borders are a complete deviation from the central design. The four borders are all very distinctive from each other, yet the use of repeating floral head designs brings the whole composition together. What makes this Hamadan Kelleh especially interesting is the use of these charming little tribal animal figures, which can be seen at either side of the rug, both in the field and the first border. |
