Leighton House
About the event
This National Play Day, join the team from Hekayyatna (Arabic for "our stories") in the Leighton House garden for an afternoon of games, making, and shared play, drawn from across the Arab world and reimagined for every generation to enjoy together.
Learn to play and compete in backgammon with Yallah Tawlah, or discover the flick-and-strike of carrom with Karrom – games that have gathered friends and families around a single table for generations. Younger and older visitors alike can follow a treasure hunt through the historic Arab Hall, uncovering its tiles, patterns and stories along the way. In our hands-on tile workshop, design your own motifs and piece together your very own Arab Hall, inspired by the building's celebrated interiors.
Throughout the afternoon, a live calligrapher will be on hand, creating beautifully hand-written names and proverbs, a special keepsake to take home.
Between activities, there's space to simply wander, rest and let your own play unfold at your own pace.
A welcoming, drop-in gathering for all ages and generations, offering an afternoon of joyful play and cultural connection.
