RE-ENVISIONING THE PROMISED LAND: ORIENTALISM THROUGH 'OLANA' AND LEIGHTON HOUSE

Monday 27 January, 7- 8:30; doors open at 6:30pm

A talk exploring the work of American painter Frederic Church (1826-1900) and his home, Olana, a prime example of Orientalist eclecticism in architecture. This will be considered in contrast to Victorian artist Frederic Leighton and his ‘House Beautiful’ in West London.

SONGS AND SOUVENIRS, A MUSICAL EVENING WITH DAME FELICITY LOTT

Tuesday 18 February, 7- 8:15; doors open at 6:15pm

Leighton House Museum is delighted to present British soprano Dame Felicity Lott, who will be performing some of her most-beloved songs accompanied by her pianist, Sebastian Wybrew. This biographical repertoire will include songs by Gilbert and Sullivan, Franz Lehar, Richard Strauss, Jacques Offenbach, Francis Poulenc and Noël Coward.

DRINK AND DRAW

THE HOLLAND PARK CIRCLE: ARTISTS HOUSES WALKING TOURS

Join our guided walks around the exterior of the unique group of studio-houses built by Victorian artist and President of the Royal Academy, Frederic, Lord Leighton and his contemporaries on Holland Park Road and Melbury Road (West London). Discover the fascinating story of how this corner of Holland Park became synonymous with a group of the leading artists of the late Victorian period. Find out why they came to build in this area and the architects that they chose.

Please note that admission to Leighton House Museum is not included and you need to buy a ticket if you would like to visit.

 

OUTREACH WORKSHOP: FREDERIC LEIGHTON, THE TRAVELLING ARTIST

  • Available on demand on Mondays or Tuesdays, subject to availability
  • Suitable for groups of adults (18+) living with mental health issues; people living with early stage dementia
  • Delivered at your venue for groups of 8 – 20

This sessions are part of our Community Engagement Programme and explore Leighton's passion for art and travelling. Participants will learn about Leighton’s life, handle Victorian period objects, read Leighton’s letters and discover his favourite travelling destinations in the Middle East. They also will be able to share and discuss their own experiences of travel and find their own connections with the Victorian artist and with each other.
