Modified Timetables – Summary Guidance

Actions

All pupils of compulsory school age are entitled to a full‑time education that is suitable to their age, aptitude and any special educational needs. A modified (part‑time) timetable means a pupil attends school for fewer hours than most of their peers and should only be used in very exceptional circumstances. It must always be temporary, carefully planned and in the child’s best interests, and must never be used to manage behaviour.

Where a modified timetable is considered necessary – for example due to medical needs or to support reintegration after a period of absence – it must be ambitious, have a clear plan for returning to full‑time education, and be regularly reviewed.

Schools are required to inform the local authority when modified timetables are used for pupils with an EHCP, those under assessment for an EHCP and children looked after. Schools are also welcomed to contact their LA link advisor when using modified timetables for any other pupils.

Schools must ensure:

  • parental consent is given and fully informed
  • the arrangement is time‑limited with clear review points and an end date
  • safeguarding, curriculum access and wellbeing are carefully considered
  • correct attendance coding is used
  • statutory and local guidance is followed

Failure to use modified timetables appropriately may be viewed by Ofsted as an unlawful suspension or off‑rolling.

Read the full Modified Timetables Guidance for detailed expectations, statutory responsibilities, notification requirements and review processes.
