School Nursing Services

The teams comprise of School Nurses who are qualified nurses with additional specialist public health qualification. They work with a skill mix team to provide services to children, young people and families within various community settings.

The School Nursing Services co-ordinate and deliver public health interventions for school-aged children (5-19years) – they are skilled in managing the relationships between child, family and school settings and offers the following services:

  • Health promotion, education and training - Advice on behaviour, sleep, bed wetting, healthy lifestyle choices
  • Emotional health support - National Child Measurement Programme (weight and height measurement of reception and year 6 pupils)
  • Support for children with complex medical needs e.g. asthma, epilepsy, allergy
  • Support for children with special needs - Support for young carers and looked after children
  • Partnership working with other agencies to safeguard children

The teams lead on the delivery of the elements of the Healthy Child Programme (a universal preventative service, providing families with a programme of screening, immunisation, health and development reviews, supplemented by advice around health, wellbeing and parenting) in partnership with other health and social care colleagues.
