Shelter provides advice about homelessness, housing benefit, private renting, money, eviction, repossession, energy problems, repairs and home safety. For further information, visit the Shelter London Public Advice Line.

Are you homeless, or at risk of becoming homeless? If so, we can offer you advice, support and guidance with housing, benefit and debt problems on our telephone advice lines.

Helpline for urgent cases

The emergency helpline is open Monday – Friday 8am – 6pm, excluding bank holidays for urgent cases of homelessness.

Our helpline is free. For people under 25 is part of the London Youth Gateway service. For people 25 and over is part of the STAR partnership.

It is useful to have documents ready before you call, like your tenancy agreement or relevant letters or messages.

Keep trying if you can't get through. We're busy but we're here to help.

Also, for housing and homelessness advice visit our online resources which are accessible 365 days a year.

Our Legal Aid legal services

Our legal team can help you if you are eligible for Legal Aid, for example, if you need to go to court about a housing problem or to challenge a council’s homelessness decision.

To speak to the legal team you need to make an appointment. To make an appointment with the legal team in London, please call 0344 515 1212 between 9am and 5pm, Monday to Friday. This number is for new legal appointments only.
