Description

In the foreground a woman in classical dress lies across a low wall around a pond. Her feet are to the left and her head to the right of the canvas. The lower half of her body is turrned towards the viewer. Her left leg is bent. Her right leg falls across her left leg and hangs over the front of the wall. The upper half of her body is seen horizontally, in profile. Her face is turned towards the viewer. Her fingers are interlocked and rest on her chest. Her left elbow rest on the wall by her waist and her right elbow is above her head. Her eyes are closed and her fair wavy hair and draperies spill over the edge of the wall. The wall is decorated in reliefs (barely seen). The releif at te right can be identified as the image represented in the painting 'Flaming June', c.1895. Along the far side of the wall, across from the pond, are five plants in pots and seven doves. On the right hand side of the wall, on a plinth, a statue overlooks the ond. The staue is of a seated woman, slumped forward over a vase. Behind the pond is a hedge with flowers and behind this, to the left of the canvas, a heavily draped woman raises one finger to her mouth as if to request silence. To the left of the background classical colums can be seen. The rest of the background is made up of a landscape with trees.
