As well as drawings, modelled studies in clay were made in preparation for the painting 'The Daphnephoria'. These models were exhibited in the 'Arts and Crafts Exhibition' at the New Gallery in Regent Street, London in 1893. A guide to Leighton House Museum of 1905 notes that "there actually exist not less than thirty-six drawings" for 'The Daphnephoria'. The background of the painting was taken from landscape studies made in a pine forest near Pisa. [see: 'The Times', Monday, 02 October 1893, p.5, issue 34071, column C; Stone, J.
