| Description: | Cemetery colonnade and catacombs. 1832-33 by John Griffith, Surveyor to the General Cemetery Company. Portland stone, rendered brick walls, York stone floor. Single storey colonnade, 26 bays long, of unfluted baseless Doric columns: the endmost three bays at each end projecting and flanked with square piers. Low parapet survives in part, with some anthemion finials in situ. Rear wall formerly supported numerous marble memorial tablets and relief sculptures, most of which have been lost through vandalism. Catacombs underneath no longer accessible and partly blocked with rubble. History: one of the earliest structures in the cemetery, the colonnade was intended to house memorials to those buried in the catacombs below. These catacombs were the first of their kind in the country, and had a capacity of about 2,000 coffins. |
