Description: Car factory, now offices 1903-4 for Clement Talbot Company. Red brick with stone dressings; gabled tile roof, with gambrel roof to central bay; brick stacks with moulded stone cornices. Edwardian Baroque style. One storey with basement: 20-window range of 4:2:4:1:5:2 fenestration with pedimented central bay set slightly forward and flanked by 2-bay projections with Doric corner pilasters to pedimented stone dormers flanked by urn finials. Central entrance bay has paired Doric pilasters and dentilled entablature beneath scrolled brackets flanking corner pilasters to broken segmental pediment; relief carving of female figures flanking cartouche to tympanum, above glazing-bar window set in semi-circular arched architrave with blocked voussoirs; panelled double doors set in segmental-pedimented architrave; fronted by porte-coch�re with Doric columns flanking decorative wrought-iron panel. Rest of elevation had modillioned stone cornice and 15-pane sashes above stone string course set over 8-pane sashes; bays to right of centre have nipped dormers and 12-pane sashes above broad stone string course set over 8-pane sashes. Rear:. central bay has large semi-circular arched window above doorway with moulded stone architrave. Interior: open-well staircase with wrought-iron balustrade to right. Entrance hall: is entered by steps flanked by decorative wrought-iron balustrades; black and white marble floor; black marble banding and enriched plaster cornice to dado; other main features are enriched by decorative plasterwork; cartouche set in segmental broken pediment over panelled half-glazed double doors to front; segmental open pediment over shouldered architrave to doorway on right, and glazed screen with glazing bars and half-glazed double doors framed by shouldered architrave to left, both entrances being set within arched recesses with festooned decoration flanked by Ionic columns supporting entablature beneath coffered vaulted ceiling with enriched ribs to central bay. Two full-height (basement to roof) display halls to left are approached from entrance hall via balcony and stairs with wrought-iron balustrade having fleur-de-lys panels to friezes; Corbels support elliptical iron lattice trusses to roof; decorative roundel in Art Nouveau style to first display hall, with'Sunbeam Talbot Automobile Works 1903' in raised relief surrounding festooned wreath and two female figures flanking company insignia. This office block was erected to serve one of Britain's earliest car factories, built by a syndicate established to import Clement cars from France; construction was supervised by Charles Garrard who had worked with Adolphe Clement in France; its high architectural quality is indicative of the firm's high aspirations, the design including display halls "where visitors will be able to inspect finished cars, chassis, sectioned working models, interesting relics, and accessories
