Description: | Tomb of William Cavendish Bentinck, 5th Duke of Portland, died 1879: by McDonald, Field & Co., masons of Aberdeen. Pink Peterhead granite slab set within very large plot bounded by kerbs and posts of grey granite, Two-stage slab with coped upper surfaces on a base of York stone placed in centre of a very large plot; boundary posts (formerly linked with bronze railings and chains) in form of cylinders with round caps. Several other family tombs are also located within the enclosure. This is the largest plot in the cemetery. History: Portland, known as the `Mole Duke', was a vastly wealthy landowner who devoted his later years to underground architecture. |
