Body Worn Cameras

Body Worn Cameras – Service Information

Some operatives working on behalf of the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea (RBKC), including those employed by our waste and street cleansing contractor Suez, may wear Body Worn Cameras (BWCs) while carrying out their duties.

BWCs are used for the following purposes:

  • to support the safety and wellbeing of staff when undertaking their work in the public realm
  • to deter and record incidents of abuse, aggression, or anti-social behaviour
  • to assist in the investigation of incidents and, where necessary, support enforcement action

Cameras are used in accordance with relevant data protection legislation, including the UK General Data Protection Regulation (UK GDPR) and the Data Protection Act 2018.

Key points regarding the use of BWCs:

  • cameras are not recording continuously and will only be activated where appropriate, such as during incidents or where there is a perceived risk to staff or the public
  • where practicable, individuals will be made aware if recording is taking place
  • recordings are handled securely and retained only for as long as necessary for their intended purpose
  • access to footage is restricted and may be shared with relevant authorities, including the police, where lawful and appropriate

RBKC is committed to ensuring that the use of BWCs is proportionate, transparent, and respectful of individuals’ privacy, while helping to maintain a safe environment for both staff and residents.

Further information on how personal data is managed can be found in the Council’s Privacy Notice.
