Free school meals (FSM)

Free school meals is a government initiative which provides children with a nutritious meal during term time. You can apply for free school meals if your child is in full time education and you receive any of the following benefits:

  • Universal Credit
  • support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
  • households may also be entitled to a meal if they:
  • are in receipt of income-related Employment and Support Allowance
  • receive the guaranteed element of Pension Credit
  • meet criteria set out in separate guidance for families with no recourse to public funds

Apply for free school meals

To apply for free school meals

  • your child needs to attend a school in Kensington and Chelsea
  • you need to be the parent or guardian of the child or children
  • you need to have a National Insurance number or a National Asylum Support Service number
  • you need to be in receipt of one of the qualifying benefits

Mayor of London Universal Free School Meals

All statutory aged primary school children in state-funded schools in London automatically get free school meals whether their parent or carer receives one of the qualifying benefits or not. If you receive one of the qualifying benefits, you are strongly encouraged to apply for Free School Meals. There are significant additional benefits that families receive when registered for a Free School Meal, which includes:

  • Access to free activities, and a healthy meal offer through the Holiday Activities and Food (HAF) programme, during the school holidays
  • Schools can receive extra funding from the Government (pupil premium) which will be used towards your child’s education. This additional money is used to ensure that children achieve academically and have full access to educational and cultural activities
