Using suspensions and exclusions
For the vast majority of pupils, suspensions (formerly known as fixed-period/term exclusions) and permanent exclusions may not be necessary, as other strategies can manage behaviour. However, if approaches towards behaviour management have been exhausted, then suspensions and permanent exclusions will sometimes be necessary as a last resort. This ensures other pupils and teaching staff are protected from disruption and can learn in safe, calm, and supportive environments.

This guide includes guidance for schools on the suspension/exclusion process, with links to relevant Department for Education guidance. There is also a set of template letters for schools to use to communicate with parents/carers when they have decided to suspend/exclude a child from school.
The referral form used to ensure any child of compulsory school age who has been permanently excluded from school is referred to alternative provision is also available in this section.
