Animal warden services

Our animal warden service provides information for dog and other animal owners in the borough. They will also collect stray dogs that are contained in a secure location.

Finding a stray dog

If you have found a stray dog and it is confined in a secure location please call 03444 828 320 to arrange collection.  The warden will collect the dog and it will be taken to a safe holding kennel (operational 7 days a week, 24 hour a day)

If you think your dog has been collected

If you have lost your dog and think that we may have collected it -

  • Visit the Lost Dogs website and click on the link for Royal Borough of Kensington.
  • Call the supplementary dedicated lost dog claim line: 03444 828 300 (Operational 7 Days A Week, 08:30am to 17:00pm)
  • This claim line number is Reserved for dog owners who have identified their dog on our website and wish to Arrange its Return. 

You will be required to provide proof of ownership and proof of address and to pay the fees outlined below.

Dog collection fees

The fee for collection your dog is £25 plus £17 for each day that the dog is kennelled. An additional £25 is payable if a dog in not micro-chipped or incorrectly micro-chipped.

Dogs are only held for the statutory seven-day period. Fees are only reduced or waived in the most exceptional cases. If you wish to discuss this please call the dog warden manager.  Fees must be paid before a dog can be collected.

You will need to provide proof of address in order to collect your dog (such as a recent utility bill). If you would like a warden to return your dog to you from the kennels, an additional charge of £25 will be payable.

Dog control orders

You face a fine of up to £1,000 if you do not clean up after your dog. 

The maximum number of dogs that one person can walk on designated public spaces is six. The Dog Control Orders apply to the lands specified in the following document:

 

Dog registration scheme

We operate a free dog registration scheme for our residents. The scheme provides additional peace of mind to dog owners and will speed up the return of your dog if it is lost and picked up by the animal warden. To register your dog please complete the following form:

 

Lost dogs and cats

If you have lost your dog or cat you can call the lost line at Battersea Dogs and Cats Home. See the Battersea website for details,  or for lost dogs that have been collected by our contractor, SDK, please visit Lost Dogs UK website.

 

Dead cats collected by the council’s street cleansing contractors

 

Operatives from SDK Environmental Limited will on request attend the council depot and scan for microchip implants. Where a chip is found, they will utilise their company PIN code to obtain (where possible) the owner's recorded details. They will then advise the client accordingly so that the owner can be notified.
