Black History Month at Libraries and Archives

This event is part of a special programme of events and book displays, delivered by Libraries and Archives, to celebrate Black History Month throughout October 2022. The theme is ‘Time for Change: Action Not Words’. Join us as part of the nationwide celebration of Black History, Arts and Culture in the UK.

In 1958, Sonny Roberts left his native Jamaica, to travel by passenger ship to London. Come along to find out how Sonny went from entertaining wedding guests with his sound system, Lavender, to founding Planetone, the first black owned recording studio in Britain. Sonny went on to produce many firsts, as well as creating hit records for UB40 and Judy Boucher.

Join us to hear Cleon Roberts talk about her father's life, with music, videos and record sleeves to bring his great legacy to life.
