About the author:

Alex Bollen is a self-employed researcher, writer, and NCT Postnatal Practitioner with a diverse professional background that spans over two decades. After graduating with a degree in History from Oxford University, Alex initially trained as a solicitor before transitioning to a career in research. In 1999, she joined what was then MORI, where she spent 11 years working across various research disciplines. She led brand research at MORI and later became Head of Customer Research at Ipsos MORI, contributing extensively to research discussions and taking on divisional responsibilities for marketing.

Since becoming self-employed in 2011, Alex has continued to work with a range of clients on both qualitative and quantitative social and market research projects, as well as providing research training. In addition to her research career, she qualified as a Postnatal Practitioner with the NCT in 2012 and earned the designation of Excellent Practitioner in 2015. She runs groups for new mothers and has written, edited, and reviewed content for the NCT.

Drawing from her extensive expertise across these fields, Alex's debut book, Motherdom: Breaking Free from Bad Science and Good Mother Myths, was published in the UK and US in March 2025 by Verso. Throughout her work, Alex seeks to understand what shapes people’s emotions, actions, and behaviors, drawing connections between research, motherhood, and the cultural narratives that influence them.
