From 1930 to 1934, in the early days of talking pictures, Hollywood filmmakers defiantly ignored the strict Production Code guidelines published in 1930 that were supposed to keep movies morally “clean.” The result were some of the most controversial, outrageous, and wildly entertaining movies of their time.

About the speaker

Steven C. Smith is an Emmy-nominated documentary producer and author who specializes in Hollywood history. His over-200 documentaries include Thou Shalt Not: Sex, Sin and Censorship in Pre-Code Hollywood...The Sound of a City: Julie Andrews Returns to Salzburg...and A Place for Us: West Side Story’s Legacy. His documentary collaborators include Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Sidney Poitier and Stephen Sondheim.
