Short breaks

Short breaks for children with disabilities

Short breaks are part of the Bi-Borough Children with Disabilities Family Help Service.

This service brings together:

  • the Bi-Borough Short Breaks service
  • Disabled Children teams in Westminster
  • Disabled Children teams in Kensington and Chelsea

We work with families to give children and young people the right support at the right time.

What a short break is

A short break gives disabled children and young people time away from their carers.

Short breaks can help children and young people:

  • try new activities
  • make friends
  • have fun
  • build confidence and independence

Short breaks also give parents and carers a break from caring responsibilities.

Support may be available:

  • during the day
  • in the evening
  • overnight
  • at weekends
  • for a few hours or a few days

The support we offer depends on your child’s assessed needs.

How to get a short break

You can contact us yourself or ask a professional to make a referral.

For emergencies outside these hours, call 020 7373 2227.

If we can offer support, a family help practitioner or social worker will assess your child’s needs.

They will look at:

  • your child’s needs
  • the needs of brothers and sisters
  • your family’s needs
