Mobile lifting operations licence
You need a mobile lifting licence if you want to use any mechanical lifting equipment on a public road in the borough.
You will need a licence for the following activities:
- placing a crane on the highway
- placing a cherry picker on the highway
- placing an aerial work platform on the highway
You do not need a mobile lifting licence for a Hiab operation if the delivery takes less than 20mins but you must ensure your site is fully protected in accordance with the Safety at Road and Street Works Code of Practice.
Cost
A mobile lifting licence costs £750 and lasts for the duration of your works.

You need to make your application at least 10 working days in advance.

Extend a mobile lifting licence
If you need to extend your licence you must contact the Council as soon as possible before the end of your current licence to discuss how we wish you to proceed. You may need to pay an additional application fee and any suspension fees that you owe.
What happens next
After we have reviewed your application we will email you with a reference number and payment details. After payment we will email you a copy of the licence. You must display it on site for the duration of your works from the first day you start your work.
