Building materials licence
You need a valid licence to leave building materials on the highway. You will not require a licence if the material is left on the highway for less than 20mins whilst it is being transferred into your work site. Regardless of how long the material is left on the public highway it must be protected at all times in accordance with the Safety at Street and Road Works Code of Practice.
If you don't have a licence, you will be committing offence under:
- Highways Act 1980 (sections 169, 172, 173 and 184)
- GLC General Powers Act 1970 (sections 1 and 5)
- Local Government (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1976
- Highways Act 1980 (sections 137, 170 and 171)
Before you start work you must get a licence and pay a deposit.
If your application relates to a site with a Construction Traffic Management Plan (CTMP) Planning Condition, you must declare this and ensure your licence complies with all CTMP conditions.
If a parking suspension is required, you must apply for it before you apply for a licence. The suspension reference number must be quoted on the licence application form.
Licences can only be issued to registered companies.
Building material licences and any renewals are issued for a period of one month at a time.
