Heating your home safely this Winter

Published: Tuesday 5 November 2024

As the cost of living increases and the cold weather sets in, we want to make sure that everyone stays safe in their homes. Heating your home can be difficult, but worry not, we have compiled a list of dos and don’ts to follow if you are unsure or just need a reminder!

Do's and don'ts for heating your home safely

  • Do, make sure you have working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
  • Do, buy any electrical products from reputable retailers – and always sign up for the national product safety alerts and recalls, and register appliances.
  • Do not dry clothes on storage heaters, as this is a fire hazard, or radiators, as this will increase the moisture in your home and cause dampness and mould growth.
  • Do not use paraffin lamps or portable gas heaters in your home. They are a major fire hazard and can also cause carbon monoxide poisoning when used indoors.
  • Do not run electrical appliances such as tumble dryers, washing machines and dishwashers overnight. If a fire should start it might go undetected for longer allowing occupants less time to respond quickly and safely.

Tips for using heaters safely

For those who do have electrical heaters in their homes, we understand these can be very effective at heating one room. However please be mindful of the following

  • Don't take risks with old heaters - if it's electrical and getting older, get it tested by a qualified electrician or buy a new one.
  • Where possible, secure heaters against a wall to stop them from falling over, or fit wall-mounted heaters.
  • Always sit at least one metre away from a heater as it could set light to your clothes or chair.
  • Before attempting to move your heater, turn it off and allow it to cool first.
