To make sure people get the support they need we’ve made a one-off payment of £200 to help some of our older residents with the cost of heating their homes over winter.
In the autumn, the Government limited the Winter Fuel Payment so that only pensioners who also received Pension Credit would still get it.
As part of our commitment to be a fairer council, we decided to support tenants who are just above the threshold for Pension Credit with a one-off sum of £200. These residents who narrowly missed out on the Winter Fuel Payments would still have found it difficult to heat their home to a comfortable level in the colder months.
This was paid directly to affected residents’ rent accounts and came from the housing management Tenancy Support Fund. The fund was set up to provide financial support to households most affected by the rising cost of living.
Cllr Sof McVeigh, lead member for housing, said:
Even in the mildest winters, temperatures regularly fall below zero and keeping a home warm can be a costly business. I’m proud that the Council was able offer this support to some of our residents who most need it. Any Council resident who’s struggling should reach out to our teams in housing management who can offer help and advice.
