Taking reading to the great outdoors
This year, we are taking it outside with our theme, 'Story Garden – Adventures in Nature and the Great Outdoors'.
This exciting new theme will inspire children to tap into a world of imagination through reading, exploring the magical connection between storytelling and nature. A creative and interactive way for children to get involved at their local library.
The Reading Agency's annual Summer Reading Challenge is delivered in partnership with public libraries across the UK. It’s free for children to take part.

Throughout the summer, children joining ‘Story Garden’ can:
- discover new books
- participate in free activities at their local library
- explore the link between reading and the great outdoors, where nature and imagination come together.
Our libraries have already began to get into the outdoor spirit, hosting gardening sessions and outdoor walks for our residents. If you are interested in getting involved this summer, visit our Eventbrite page to see all upcoming events at your local library.
Volunteer with us
Our libraries are looking for volunteers from age 13 onwards to help us deliver events and activities for this year’s Summer Reading Challenge. If you fancy developing new skills while having fun, then look no further.
Apply in your local library or email your volunteer application form to [email protected]. Full training and materials will be provided.
