Eighth anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy

Published: Thursday 12 June 2025

Saturday 14 June 2025 will be the eighth anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy.

Leader of the Council Cllr Elizabeth Campbell has made a statement.

Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said:

“Eight years on from the Grenfell tragedy, our thoughts remain with those who lost their lives, their loved ones and their homes on 14 June 2017. This Council could and should have done more to keep our residents safe before the fire, and to care for them in the aftermath.

“This anniversary is particularly poignant. It’s the first since the Grenfell Inquiry laid bare the failings that led to the tragedy, and the last before the Tower is sensitively taken down. While the community continues its long wait for justice, we have begun to deliver on the 45 commitments we made to change in light of the Inquiry's findings.

“We will not stop until we have improved our culture and met the challenge set for us by bereaved and survivors to become the best Council for our residents as a lasting legacy to the tragedy.”

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry published its findings in September 2024 and the Council responded in November 2024, making 45 commitments in light of the findings.

In May 2025, the Council published its first progress report on how it is meeting the commitments. You can find out more and read the full report on our website.
