Funding half-term meals as cost of living rises

Published: Monday 14 February 2022

More than 4,000 children in Kensington and Chelsea will receive meal vouchers from the Council for February half term this week. The £15 meal vouchers will go to eligible families and have been distributed via schools throughout the past week.

Over £65,000 has been spent on the vouchers, funded by the Household Support Fund, which has allocated a total of £1 million to support families during this time of financial pressure. With the cost of living rising and energy costs causing concerns to families across the country, the fund will support young people in the Council's care, fund local food providers and contribute to community food pantries in the borough.

Cllr Josh Rendall, Lead Member for Family and Children’s Services, said:

“Families have had a tough couple of years. It’s been great to see children back in school and getting back to normality, but we do hear concerns about half term costs. These vouchers will help families focus on making sure their children have an active, healthy and exciting half-term, rather than worrying about food.

“We’ve also identified people in our borough at the highest risk of fuel poverty and are offering extra support with energy bills through our share of the government’s household support fund.”

To ensure young people and families stay active and entertained throughout half-term, the Our City website features countless local activities and allows you to filter the results to only see activities of interest to you.

For younger children, half-term clubs will make sure they remain active and creative throughout the week, while older kids can get stuck into a high energy boxing class, or a CV building creative workshop.

During the Christmas break last year, the Our City website received over 13,000 views and facilitated 59 bookings on to local courses and activities.
