Kensington and Chelsea’s three largest housing estates have all been awarded Green Flag status, the international quality mark for well-managed parks and green spaces. The achievement means Silchester Estate, World’s End Estate and Lancaster West Estate are now recognised as some of the best green spaces in social housing in the country.
The Council is working with residents to create greener and more welcoming places, through investment in estate landscaping, biodiversity, sustainability and resident-focused improvements. The awards reflect commitments made to improve not just residents’ homes, but the local areas the Council manages. It shows the progress the Council is making in delivering the commitments set out in the Housing Asset Management Strategy.
Managed by Keep Britain Tidy, the Green Flag Awards are recognised internationally as the gold standard for parks and green spaces. They recognise sites that are welcoming, safe, clean, environmentally sustainable and well maintained.
Feedback from the judges about the Silchester Estate included:
“The Silchester Estate provides a green lung and breathing space for residents. Site staff have an excellent understanding of how the area needs to be managed and how they can plan for challenges or problems. There is an active residents' association who are engaged and contribute within consultation and events."
Eryl Wrage, Chair of the World’s End Residents’ Association, said:
“We residents of World’s End estate are delighted that our beautiful gardens and green spaces have been awarded a Green Flag. We are extremely fortunate to have a dedicated team of gardeners - Tree Wise Men - and our estate caretakers who keep the gardens and planters looking vibrant and colourful throughout the year, with a variety of trees and plants including hibiscus, hydrangeas and roses, lilac and cherry trees for spring colour. And our community vegetable garden is especially appreciated.”
Cllr Josh Rendall, lead member for parks, said:
"It’s great to see the quality of our parks and estates recognised with Green Flag Awards. The inclusion of several housing estates shows we’re providing excellent green spaces for all residents and visitors to our borough. I’m grateful to the staff and residents who put their energy into maintaining these places."
The success of the estates is part of a wider achievement for the borough. Several Kensington and Chelsea parks and open spaces have also received Green Flag Awards this year, highlighting the borough’s ongoing investment in high-quality green spaces for residents and visitors alike.
