As you may be aware, the Council is losing over £100 million of Government funding over a four-year period as a result of decisions taken by the Government through its Fair Funding Review. This is an existential cut in funding, equivalent to over 40 per cent of our controllable budget.
We are acutely aware of the impact that this Government’s decision will have on our residents with cuts to services and tax rises, and we are not prepared to let that happen without exhausting every avenue available to us.
As part of this, we are putting forward a proposal to the Government, asking it to reconsider its funding decision for Kensington and Chelsea. This would help us protect essential local services and continue to keep our council tax low.
How are we doing this?
We plan to use something called the Sustainable Communities Act. This Act allows councils to put forward proposals on behalf of its residents that would improve the economic, social or environmental well-being of their area.
We believe that asking for changes to our funding allocation meet the criteria of the Act, and that a fairer settlement would markedly improve the economic, social and environmental well-being of our borough and its residents.
How can you help?
For this to work, we need to demonstrate to the Government that our local residents agree. We are therefore asking you to add your voice to our consultation.
Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said:
"The Government’s so-called Fair Funding Review will strip over £100 million from this Council over four years. The consequences will fall on residents: cuts to services and tax rises forced upon them, entirely as a result of decisions taken in Whitehall, not this Town Hall. I am not prepared to let that happen without a fight.
“Alongside Westminster and Wandsworth, we are asking for our residents’ support to submit a proposal under the Sustainable Communities Act, calling on the Government to reconsider its proposals. Our residents deserve a fairer and more reasonable deal – one does not lead to economic and social hardship.”
