Keep those drains clear!

Please be mindful when disposing of fat and oil. It may seem like the easiest option, but please resist the temptation to pour oils and fats down the kitchen sink after cooking.

Cooking fat and oils will eventually turn solid and build up in your pipes. When this happens, it causes blockages which create issues for everyone in the immediate area.

This is particularly common in blocks of flats or converted houses where different homes share the same plumbing, and it can cause dirty water to back up into neighbours’ sinks or baths.

Follow our top tips for disposing of fat and oil

Cool and contain
  • Let the oil cool completely
  • Pour the cooled oil into a non-recyclable, sealable container
  • Once sealed, place the container in the general waste
Wipe and waste
  • Use kitchen paper towels to soak up the excess grease, fat or oil from pots, pans and plates before washing.
  • Dispose of the greasy paper towels in your food or general waste bin.
let it lay
  • Let the fat solidify in the pan or a container, then scrape it directly into your food waste bin.
Recycle
  • For large quantities, you can take used cooking oil to your local recycling centre.

It’s better to prevent your pipes from getting blocked in the first place if you can, but if they do, please report it as a repair to www.rbkc.gov.uk/housing-repairs.
