Kensington and Chelsea has been showered with Gold awards at this year’s London in Bloom awards on Monday at Wisley.
Eight parks achieved Gold, with another park receiving Silver Gilt and the borough as a whole being recognized with a Gold award as well. The outstanding Emslie Horniman Pleasance also won the Small Parks category overall.
As well as our parks being recognised, many of our community kitchen gardens also received recognition, with two being awarded National Certificates of Distinction and nine reaching Level 5 Outstanding in the ‘It’s Your Neighbourhood’ category.
Two individuals were also awarded, North Kensington resident Harvey Groffman received the Gold and Winning Entry awards in the Front Gardens and Balconies category and Lisa Wilkinson, one of three Council community kitchen gardeners who help residents grow food in their own neighbourhoods, was given the Outstanding Contribution Award for her services to community gardening in London.
Welcoming the results, Cllr Emma Will, lead member for Parks and Leisure, said:
“It’s great news that all the hard work of our parks team and residents has been recognised by the London in Bloom awards and I’m delighted that we’ve achieved our best ever results.
“Our fantastic parks and community kitchen gardens are part of wider work we’re doing, including planting 400 trees to enhance our streets as well as our parks and we’re committed to improving our biodiversity with our very successful bee superhighway linking up more of the borough with pollinators and helping our wildlife and green spaces to thrive.”
Resident Harvey Groffman, recipient of a gold award said:
“I’m ecstatic! It’s only my second year entering London In Bloom and last year I won a Silver-Gilt. I did hope to get a Gold this year, but I never expected to be the overall winner."
The awards recognise and encourage communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting changes to their areas and reward imaginative planting, cleanliness, sustainability and community effort.
