Work has begun on 11 new Council homes at Silchester Arches in the north of the borough.

When will the scheme be completed?

The scheme, which has now reached the half-way mark, will be the first Council-built scheme to offer 100 per cent social rent homes in decades, and is on track to be completed by the end of the year. The development also includes one ground floor wheelchair accessible home.

Building environmentally-friendly and cost saving homes

This six-storey building incorporates environmentally-friendly features such as double-glazed windows to retain the heat and air-source heating systems which use no gas and a small amount of electricity. These features also mean the homes are cheaper for the residents to live in.

Each of the homes will have a winter garden which will ensure that noise from the surrounding area is limited. These are enclosed outdoor balconies which provide residents with the opportunity of getting a little bit of the outdoors while indoors.

Cllr Sof McVeigh, Lead Member for New Homes said: “Our New Homes Programme is really starting to motor now. We celebrated the opening of 20 new homes at Hewer Street last year and I’m looking forward to welcoming more residents into two of our other schemes at Kelso Cochrane House in Kensal Road and Acklam Road later this year.

“Together with Silchester Arches, these four schemes will provide over 100 new much-needed new homes, 59 of which are for Council tenants at social rent. Work is also progressing at our Barlby Road and Lots Road sites to provide even more homes and community facilities.”
