Ninth anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy

Published: Friday 12 June 2026

The Leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, has made a statement ahead of the ninth anniversary of the Grenfell tragedy on Sunday 14 June 2026.

Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, Leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said:

“It is nine years since the Grenfell Tragedy, and my thoughts and the thoughts of everyone at Kensington and Chelsea Council remain with those who lost their lives, those who were bereaved and those who survived, as well as with the local community.

“This anniversary comes as work continues to carefully take down the Tower. I know how profoundly difficult this is for many, and how important it is that Grenfell is never forgotten.

“This Council could and should have done more to keep residents safe before the fire and to care for people in its aftermath. We remain truly sorry for those failings. We are determined to meet the challenge set by bereaved families and survivors: to change, to become the best council for our residents, and to deliver on the commitments we made following the Grenfell Tower Inquiry.”

Cllr Tom Bennett, Lead Member for Modernisation and Change, with responsibility for Grenfell legacy alongside the Leader, said:

“My thoughts are with the bereaved, survivors and the wider Grenfell community on the ninth anniversary of the tragedy.

“Having spent the past year as Mayor, I have deeply valued the opportunity to meet and listen to communities across the borough. That experience has reinforced for me how important it is that the Council continues to act with care and humility.

“Grenfell is a top priority within my role and it is a profound responsibility to serve as the lead member for this work and to ensure the Council meets the commitments it has made to the community as a lasting legacy to the tragedy.”

The Grenfell Tower Inquiry published its findings in September 2024 and the Council responded in November 2024, making 45 commitments in response to the findings. You can read about how we are meeting the commitments and see our latest progress on our website.
