Following the Prime Minister’s announcement that England will lockdown on Thursday 5 November, Kensington and Chelsea Council has reached out to all local schools to expand their free parking offer throughout the duration of the second lockdown. Schools will be required to continue operating throughout the second lockdown as per guidance from the Government.

Recognising the vital work undertaken by teachers to minimise disruption to students’ learning, the Council’s offer will allow school staff to park in payphone visitor bays for the duration of the school day at no cost while the lockdown is in place.

The offer will also be available to those working in nurseries, early years and other settings required to stay open during lockdown.

Cllr Josh Rendall, Lead Member for Family and Children's Services, said: “While a second lockdown is necessary, it will no doubt be causing pressure to school staff across the country. Through providing free parking to hard-working school staff, we hope those at Kensington and Chelsea’s schools will feel supported by the Council and feel our appreciation and recognition of their work.”

Cllr Cem Kemahli, Lead Member for the Environment, said: “Before Covid-19, we were on a mission to reduce the number of cars travelling into, through and around Kensington and Chelsea. While the Council continues to encourage green methods of travel such as cycling and public transport, this must come second to how safe those working in the borough feel at this time.”

Mariella Ardron, Principal at Chelsea Academy, said: “Over a third of Chelsea Academy staff will be taking advantage of this extended offer to park for free throughout the second lockdown. It’s been hugely reassuring to staff working at the school and we’re really grateful for this support from the Council.”

School staff who wish to join the free parking concession scheme for the duration of the new national lockdown period should email [email protected] for application details. When lockdown restrictions are lifted, the discounted parking policy for school staff will be reinstated.
