Transport for London has committed to step free access to all platforms at South Kensington Station in their 2026 business plan.
The Council has long supported step-free at South Kensington and made a commitment to make a financial contribution last April, providing step-free went to both the Piccadilly and Circle and District platforms.
Despite challenging financial circumstances following the Government's fair funding review, the Leader has expressed a wish to keep the commitment of a financial contribution to the scheme.
Cllr Elizabeth Campbell, Leader of Kensington and Chelsea Council, said:
"To finally get this commitment from Transport for London to introduce step-free access at South Kensington Station after years of campaigning is truly brilliant. The station is so important, not only for our residents but for the many people visiting the area. From the three local hospitals to the iconic museums, we need a tube station that meets the needs of patients and visitors. Almost 30 million people pass through the station every year and that journey should be accessible for everyone.
"Last year we said we would contribute to the cost if TfL committed to step-free access to both the Piccadilly and Circle and District platforms. Despite our serious financial challenges I am determined that we stay true to our word and will be speaking to officers about our contribution."
Planning history
The plans are linked to a wider development of the station. In 2021, the Council's planning committee rejected plans for a development at the site of South Kensington Station. The plans at the time included step-free access to only the district and circle line platforms, not the piccadilly. This decision was overturned in December 2023 to allow the development to go ahead, and the lead member at the time Cllr Cem Kemahli said he expected to see step-free access at the station.
