Summer Sundays returns to Portobello Market

Published: Tuesday 14 June 2022

Summer Sundays at Portobello will be returning this year after a successful run for the first time in 2021. The iconic Portobello Market will be opening on Sundays throughout the summer to provide an extra day for visitors and residents to shop and enjoy from 19 June to 7 August.

The Sunday markets will see stalls featuring food, antiques, vintage clothes, home accessories and more, as traders welcome customers all weekend long. Portobello Road will also be closed to traffic on Sundays while the market is on, extending the existing road closure during standard market operating hours for a car-free shopping experience.

Cllr Josh Rendell, Lead Member for Local Economy and Employment, said:
“As one of the top outdoor shopping and visitor destinations in the world, Portobello Market is especially bustling during the summer months so it’s a great opportunity to welcome people over the whole weekend.

“Bringing back Summer Sundays, and New Youthquake, are part of the Council’s efforts to inspire more people to discover and enjoy what our markets have to offer, with more new events coming soon.”

Also returning this year is New Youthquake 2022; a special market on Sunday 17 July where young and starting-out traders aged 18-30 have the opportunity to set up their own stall. New Youthquake runs along Portobello Road and anyone with a unique or quality product to sell can apply to trade, providing a platform for budding creatives and entrepreneurs in the borough and across West London.

This New Youthquake event is part of the National Market Traders Federation’s Young Traders Market, a nation-wide competition that aims to infuse new life into the retail markets industry.

Summer Sundays and New Youthquake are part of new initiatives to come out of Kensington and Chelsea Council’s Market Plan 2022-2027. The Plan provides an overview of new ideas and improvements to support markets to thrive, as part of the borough’s local economy recovery post-Covid.

Typically, a smaller number of stalls are set up on Portobello and Golborne roads Monday to Thursday, and Friday and Saturday the entire market is fully open. On Sundays the market has historically not been open but now during Summer Sundays, a range of up to 30 stalls will be open and trading along the roads.
