Portobello Market will be opening on Sundays in the run up to Christmas to provide visitors with an extra day of shopping, with the first launching this weekend following Small Business Saturday.

‘Christmas at Portobello’ will be popping up on 5, 12 and 19 December, 10am to 4pm, with up to 180 different stalls featuring across the three dates and special performances including local choirs to add to the festive feeling.

Typically limited to Thorpe Close and Acklam Road on Sundays, the entire street market in Portobello Market will be buzzing with an extra day of shopping in the run up to Christmas as well as exciting street food and drinks.

To add to the festive feeling, performers will be taking to the stage, located between Lancaster Road and the Westway flyover, including local choirs and musicians; New Generation Steel Orchestra, the Treblemakers, Techtonics, Nostalgia Steel Band, UFO Steel Band, Ebony Steel Band, and Portobello Road Choir.

Lead Member for Economy, Employment and Innovation, Cllr Catherine Faulks said:
“Christmas is a magical time in the borough and our world-famous Portobello Market is no exception. We’re inviting visitors and locals to enjoy an extra three days in the run up to Christmas to shop with our local traders and support independent businesses.

“With the first event taking place on the weekend of Small Business Saturday, it’s the perfect time to go out and discover the unique gifts and festive treats that will be on offer, as well as musical performances for a truly memorable market experience.”

Jonathan Nixon from Portobello Green Market said:
“Christmas at Portobello is a great opportunity to bring together a curated collection of the capital’s best makers, artisans and independent businesses with a real Portobello twist. You’ll be sure to find glorious vintage fashion, amazing gifts with a personal touch, along with mouth-watering street food including handmade Italian sweet treats and mulled wine. Our partnership with the Council and shared vision of celebrating Portobello as a go-to destination throughout the festive season is a really exciting endeavour.”

Organised in partnership between Kensington and Chelsea Council, Portobello Green Market and the Westway Trust, ‘Christmas at Portobello’ will bring plenty of cheer to the borough through the community.

Small Business Saturday on 4 December will also see other pop-up events including festive jazz performances from local musicians the 606 Club at a Christmas market in Duke of York Square, and an artisan market just off Portobello Road in the pedestrianised square at the junction of Tavistock Road. You’ll be able to find handmade gifts from local traders with a personal touch.
