Transport for London safety works at Battersea Bridge

Published: Monday 2 June 2025

From  Wednesday 11 June 2025 Transport for London (TfL) will be starting to build the Battersea Bridge safety improvements scheme on the north side of the river in Kensington and Chelsea. This work is expected to take until around October 2025.

Works to the south of the bridge in Wandsworth started in November 2024 and are nearing completion.

TfL consulted on the works from November 2022 until January 2023.

Cllr Johnny Thalassites, lead member for planning and environment, said:

“After some initial improvements to safety in 2021, it’s good to see Transport for London now going further to make Battersea Bridge safer for everyone. New crossings at the junction are very welcome.

I can’t overstate the importance of our local community in bringing about these changes. Residents have campaigned tirelessly for many years after tragic loss of life at the junction and we have been right behind them, so it’s a relief to see more safety improvements at long last.

I know there is some concern about traffic impacts, particularly of the banned left turn into Beaufort Street. Once the scheme is complete we will be keeping a very close eye on the impacts and feeding back to TfL.”

What are the works?

TfL will build new straight-across push button pedestrian crossings at three arms of the junction. There is already a crossing on the bridge arm of the junction, which was completed in 2021.

They will work on the crossings one at a time to help minimise delays.

Work will also include:

  • Banning the left turn into Beaufort Street to motor traffic and cyclists;
  • Installing dropped kerbs and a shared use area on the north-west corner of the junction;
  • Installing dedicated cycle signals;
  • Building new sections of mandatory, segregated cycle track on the eastbound and westbound approaches to the junction as well as a short section on the westbound exit;
  • Building two short new sections of bus lane (around 35 metres on the westbound approach to the junction, and 98 metres on the eastbound exit). The westbound bus lane will operate 07:00 to 19:00, and the eastbound bus lane will operate 24 hours a day. Taxis, motorcycles and cycles will be permitted to enter the lanes.

When will works take place?

Works will start on 11 June 2025 and are expected to be complete in October 2025.

Working hours will be:
Weekdays 8am – 4pm
Saturdays 8am – 1.30pm

No works are expected to take place on Sundays.

There will be lane closures in place on all approaches to the junction at various times.

Buses will take longer to travel through the area. Bus stop ‘Beaufort Street’ (Stop BC), which is served by route 170 westbound, will be closed during some phases of the work. Signage will direct customers to the nearest alternative stop.

All pavements and crossings will be kept open wherever possible for pedestrians throughout the works and cyclists will be able to cycle through the area throughout.
