List of streets

The Royal Borough Council is required to keep an up to date list of streets which are highways maintainable at public expense under Section 36 of the Highways Act 1980. The Streets List indicates the status of streets within the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea as follows:

  • Public -  publicly maintainable highway and the responsibility of the Royal Borough Council as highway authority
  • Public TfL - publicly maintainable highway, but a Red Route, which is part of the Transport for London Road Network (TLRN) and the responsibility of Transport for London (TfL) as highway authority for the TLRN
  • Private - not publicly maintainable and normally the responsibility of the owners of properties in the street. The Royal Borough Council has no responsibility for the maintenance of private streets but may be under a duty to keep them free from obstruction.

There may be areas adjoining publicly maintainable highways which are privately maintainable and therefore the responsibility of the owner of the adjacent property not the Royal Borough Council. See Highways Status Enquiries.

The information contained in the Streets List is correct to the best of our knowledge and is a guide only. It does not constitute a definitive statement as to the status of any particular highway or part of a highway. The Streets List is updated regularly and the Council reserves the right to update it as necessary without prior notice.
