Athlone Gardens co-designed masterplan

About the consultation

Athlone Gardens is a popular park between Portobello Road and Wornington Road in north Kensington.

The park is due to be enlarged over the next few years. This will happen as nearby buildings are removed. We will work together with local people and community groups to co-design a masterplan for the park to help shape its future.

What the community has said so far

We have already spoken to over 100 local people, including:

  • park users on site
  • young people from Youth Action Alliance
  • residents at local meetings and one-to-one sessions
  • Action Disability Kensington & Chelsea for advice and guidance

From this early consultation, residents told us they would like:

  • more trees, plants and wildflowers
  • more seating and shade from sun and rain
  • activities for older children and teenagers, including space for ball games
  • an improved dog exercise area
  • a small park building with toilets, a café and shelter from sun and rain

We also took on board that people want to be involved in the design process but do not have much time. So we have created a public selection exercise to choose the park’s designer. This gives everyone an equal say in a quick and accessible way.

How we will choose the park's designer

We have:

  • invited expressions of interest from park designers
  • shortlisted designers based on experience and ability to deliver the project
  • asked shortlisted designers to share initial ideas based on community feedback

Read the Athlone Gardens co-designed masterplan brief that we gave to designers for more details.

Give your feedback
View the designer's ideas and give your feedback on the Athlone Gardens consultation page.

These ideas are not final designs, they show what could happen in the park.

As part of the design process, we will:

  • run one-off drop-in sessions and design workshops for groups and individuals who want to take part
  • offer longer-term design workshops for key stakeholder groups
  • allow at least six weeks for feedback at each stage of engagement
  • provide paper forms, in-person sessions and online options for everyone to participate in the process
  • keep asking how residents want to engage and adapt the process based on local consensus
  • run an independent check-in with residents to review how the process is working, ensure all voices are heard, and help shape next steps

Project timeline

  • the public selection for the park’s designer will run throughout autumn from Monday 10 November to Sunday 21 December 2025
  • a detailed delivery timeline will be shared once the designer is agreed

How we will update you

We will share updates:

  • on our website and park noticeboards
  • through emails to stakeholder groups
  • at on-site activities and drop-in sessions
  • via local newsletters and housing providers

Groups with specific needs or harder-to-reach communities, like Action Disability K&C, Youth Action Alliance and Youth Council, will be invited to themed workshops.

How we will make decisions

  • the design will be community-led, with support from the chosen designer and Council Parks Officers
  • the Lead Member for Property, Parks and Leisure will formally approve the design and oversee delivery, following council governance processes
