The Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea has responded with anger to news that the Post Office intends to close the Notting Hill branch on Westbourne Grove on 10 November.
The news comes following widespread protest from residents, celebrities and the Council at plans to close five Post Office branches in the borough.
At a number of prior meetings, Royal Borough councillors from both the Conservative and Labour parties joined forces to slam the Post Office for what they claimed was a flawed consultation process and demanded that the Post Office reverse their plans.
Council Leader, Cllr Merrick Cockell challenged the Post Office to react to the wave of public opinion against the proposed closures and address residents' "very real and pressing concerns."
But today's news will bring more misery to the thousands of residents, many of them elderly, who rely on the Post Office.
Cllr Daniel Moylan, Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Planning Policy and Transportation, said: "The decision to close the Notting Hill Post Office is another kick in the teeth to local residents. The Post Office has failed to conduct an extensive consultation exercise in a responsible manner and as a publicly accountable organisation they have shown no respect or consideration towards the people they are supposed to serve."
Tony Benn, local resident and former Postmaster-General, believes the decision to close the Westbourne Grove Post Office had already been taken. He added: "The closure will gravely damage the interests of people living and working in and around Westbourne Grove."
The North Kensington and Notting Hill Post Office Closures Action Group, who have been preparing for such a decision, are now preparing to judicially review the decision to close the branch.
The Post Office has also announced that it plans to close the Clarendon Cross Post Office, in north Kensington on November 10.
