Albert Bridge repairs
On this page
Albert Bridge closed to motor traffic on 7 February 2026 after a routine inspection found a cracked cast iron component at one of the bridge abutments.
We inspect the bridge regularly. This fault was found during one of these inspections.
The bridge is currently closed to motor vehicles while we carry out full repairs. We are also improving the road surface and doing work to protect the bridge in future.
Work being carried out
Our investigation found that the cracked cast iron component supports a joint between the catenary, cable-stay and edge girder. This joint is designed to move (rock) when temperature, wind and traffic levels change.
The damage happened when the axle in this joint seized.
In March, the Council’s Leadership Team decided to:
- fully repair the cracked component and free the seized axle in the joint, which is believed to have caused the damage
- improve the bridge while it is closed, including measures to stop parts seizing again, a new road surface, refurbished toll booths and earlier replacement of lighting to improve energy efficiency
- continue monitoring and emergency measures while permanent repairs are put in place
You can read more in the report to the Leadership Team.
Latest progress update
We have chosen our preferred design for the repair. Our contractors are now planning the work.
In April 2026, we installed a temporary support (prop) to reduce the risk of the bridge needing to close to pedestrians and cyclists.
The prop supports the weakened cast iron component and will stay in place until a permanent repair is designed and completed.
