If you have submitted an application that is still within its statutory determination period, or an agreed extension of time, a progress update may not yet be available. If you need to speak to the planning officer dealing with your application, you can email them directly. Their contact details can be found in:
- your planning application acknowledgement letter
- any emails or letters about your application

Conservation area protection
The Royal Borough is characterised by a rich historic built environment with nearly three quarters of the borough protected by 38 separate conservation areas.

Development proposals in conversation areas
Living in a conservation area does not prevent changes to your property.
If you submit a planning application for a property in a conservation area, we'll assess whether the proposal preserves or enhances the area's historic or architectural character or appearance.
Permitted development rights
Certain uses of a property such as dwelling houses benefit from permitted development rights. However, stricter controls apply in conservation areas than in other locations.
Permitted development rights are set nationally. To check whether your proposed work requires planning permission, use the government's Planning Portal.
You can also refer to the The Town and Country Planning (General Permitted Development) (England) Order 2015 (GDPO) which sets out permitted development rights in law. Conservation areas are classified as Article 2(3) land in the GPDO.
Removal of permitted development rights
Some properties have had their permitted development rights removed. This means you may need planning permission, particularly where changes could harm the character or appearance of a conservation area.
Before carrying out work, check whether your property is affected by an Article 4 Direction.
Conservation area appraisals
We publish conservation area appraisals and proposal statements that describe the special character and appearance of each conservation area. These documents help inform planning applications and guide future development.
Previously, these documents were called conservation area proposal statements. We are now updating these with new conservation area appraisals.
