Plagiarism policy
Plagiarism means presenting someone else’s work as your own.
This includes:
- submitting work that is written by someone else and not saying it is theirs
- copying another person's work, or your own previously submitted work, without referencing it
- changing some words in a sentence, but generally keeping the same information, without referencing original source
Use of Turnitin to check plagiarism
CfSSW use Turnitin to upload course work.
Turnitin compares your submitted work to all the documents within their database.
This includes:
- thousands of websites
- journals and academic institutions
- assignments already submitted to us.
Turnitin will then produce a similarity report. This highlights all the similarities that the software picked up from its database.
Use of the similarity report
Assessors always review the similarity report when marking your work.
If your work has 0% to 30% similarity:
- your work will be read by the marker
- if they deem that the similarities were relevant and appropriate there will be no further action.
- if the marker believes that you have plagiarised with intent, such as without referencing, you'll be invited to meet with your course tutor
If your work has 30% to 50% similarity:
- you will always be asked to meet with your course tutor
- this will be a opportunity to discuss how you ended up with such high similarities and any difficulties you may be having in referencing or quoting previously presented work
- your tutor will decide whether you can keep your essay on the system or resubmit it
If your work has over 50% similarity:
- this will result in an automatic fail
- your course tutor will meet with you and asked you to resubmit
- your final mark will be capped at 50%
Assignment fails and resubmissions
If you do not reach the pass mark for an assignment, you may resubmit your assignment once.
Your resubmission deadline is 4 weeks from the date you receive feedback on your first submission.
If you're required to resubmit an assignment the mark will be capped at 50%, which is the pass mark.
Resubmissions should be submitted in the re-submissions folder in your Turnitin account.
