High winds

When high winds are forecast you can minimise potential damage by securing loose objects outside, and securely fastening doors and windows. For latest weather advice and alerts, contact the Met Office.

During the storm stay indoors as much as possible, and avoid driving.

After the storm make sure neighbours are safe, ensure repair work is carried out safely, and do not touch any electrical or telephone cables that have been blown down.

What to do in a power cut

High winds can sometimes lead to power failures. You can be prepared by:

  • developing an emergency plan to include any special medical needs
  • keep a battery-operated radio, multiple torches along with extra batteries
  • keep a plug-in telephone that does not require electricity
  • keep important documents safe and handy

During a power cut:

  • keep your freezer door closed - freezer foods can last up to 24 hours
  • turn off and unplug any non-essential electrical equipment leaving one light on
  • keep warm by staying in one room and wearing several layers of clothing
  • never leave candles or heating appliances in un-occupied rooms
  • listen to your local radio news for updates (if your electricity goes off, listen on a battery-powered or car radio)
  • assume that your energy supplier is aware of widespread power cuts, but if your neighbours have power and you don’t, call your energy supplier
  • for your safety, stay away from fallen lines, flooded areas and debris
  • if using your own generator, be careful to follow safe operating procedures - never run them inside your home
  • check your circuit breaker
