Children and young people today enjoy opportunities that their parents and grandparents could have not imagined, largely due to new technologies and better education standards. However, these opportunities are only part of the complex environment that children grow up in today.
Changing family and community structures may mean that many parents no longer have the same support networks. New technologies can also mean new opportunities for children to come to harm; on the internet or as victims of cyber-bullying. Also, anxiety and fear of violence from street gangs affects many children, young people and parents.
Every Child Matters is a Government programme of change to improve outcomes for all children and young people. One of the key outcomes is 'staying safe'; recognising that children cannot reach their full potential or enjoy their childhood unless they stay safe.
